San Francisco will be the start for the record attempt San Francisco to Yokohama, Japan currently held by Steve Fossett (19 days, 15 hrs, 18 mn, 09 sec in May 1996).
 
Sailing this leg is comparable to sailing the Atlantic upwind on a much longer distance:
